The Shadows of Alexandria shows how Eratosthenes was able to measure the size of the earth in the third century BC. Armed with only a couple of observations, two measurements, and some elementary geometry, he was able to do the impossible. 17 centuries before Columbus sailed across the Atlantic, Eratosthenes knew how large the earth was with an error of only about 2%.
The Inverse Square Law depicts how light, sound, and gravity apear to diminish as they travel through space. By adding in dimensions one at a time, we see how the geometry of lines, circles, and spheres defines various types of space.
Fibonacci and the Golden Mean depicts how the Italian mathematician Fibonacci was able to find a mathematical link between organic growth and human aesthetics. Uniting the number-philosophy of the Pythagorean school to contemporary research in organic growth, Fibonacci and the Golden Mean shows us that mathematics can be a tool for unlocking the mysteries of nature and beauty.
